What is public on my Facebook Timeline?

Given the personal nature of what is shared on a Facebook account, the issue of privacy is one that has followed the social network since its launch in Mark Zuckerberg’s Harvard dorm room in 2004.However, since Facebook launched its Timeline, the debate has intensified, due to the fact that the online scrapbook-esque functionality essentially unearths your entire Facebook history and displays it in an easy-to-browse way.

Once activated on your Facebook profile, every status update, post and photo that you have shared on the site since the day you joined the social network becomes searchable to you and your friends.

The easiest way to figure out exactly what is visible on your Facebook Timeline is by visiting your Timeline and choosing to view it either as a member of the public would see it, or how a friend of yours would view your information.

If you are unhappy with the information that is visible by the public or specific friends, you can edit this by going to the Privacy Settings page and clicking on the editing your timeline info link on that page.

Thankfully, Facebook has made setting your privacy controls pretty comprehensive and simple, allowing you to either hide certain past activity from your Timeline, or at least restrict the visibility of it to certain friends who your are comfortable sharing the posts with.

This Privacy Settings page also allows you to set a default for all of the different types of content that you share on Facebook in the future, as well as controlling how you connect with potential friends. You can also restrict permissions that you may have granted to other apps, games and websites that you have previously connected with your Facebook account.
