How to make a CD

Several programs are available for computers to help you create your own compact discs (CDs). In this guide, we’re going to show you how to make a CD of music from your iTunes library.

You’ll need:

  • a computer with access to the internet, ideally through a broadband connection
  • iTunes installed on your computer (see our guide How to download iTunes)
  • an email account.
Creating a CD on a computer is often called ‘burning a CD’.

Follow these step-by-step instructions to make a CD from tracks in your library

Step 1: Open iTunes on your machine.

Step 2: Click the + sign in the bottom left of the iTunes window. This will create a new playlist for you that you can burn to a CD.

Step 3: Decide what you want to name your playlist and then type this in the box provided.

Step 4: From the the left-hand menu, click Music.

Step 5: Hold down the Ctrl key on the keyboard. While doing this, scroll through your music library and click each track that you’d like to put on the CD. You’ll notice that all the tracks you’ve clicked will turn blue.

Step 6: Right-click one of the tracks. As you hover over ‘Add to Playlist’, a menu will appear to the right. Left-click on the name that you’ve given to your CD playlist.

Step 7: Now you need to burn the CD. Put a blank CD into the CD drive.

Step 8: Still in iTunes, right-click on the playlist name. Then, in the menu that appears, click Burn Playlist to Disc.

Step 9: Click Burn.

Note: Most recordable CDs are about 70 minutes long. Ensure that your playlist is no more than that. The length of each playlist is displayed at the bottom of the iTunes window.
